You can make a usable logo today, for free, in about twenty minutes. Whether you should depends on one question: is the logo the identity, or is it one component of an identity that needs to hold together across a hundred surfaces?

The free tools, honestly assessed

Canva is the most capable. Real typography control, and you can export something respectable. Looka and similar generators produce polished results quickly from templated components. Figma is free and fully professional if you can already draw — the tool is not the constraint, the skill is.

The catch with all generators is shared by everyone who used them. Template marks recur across thousands of businesses, and in a crowded category that similarity is the opposite of what a logo is for.

What free tools cannot give you

  • Trademark clearance. Generated marks are not checked against the Indian trademark register. Discovering a conflict after printing signage is an expensive way to learn this.
  • Proper vector files. Free tiers often export raster only. You need SVG and EPS for signage, embroidery and print.
  • A system. A logo is not a brand. Type scale, colour roles, spacing, photography direction and how the mark behaves at 16px and on a building — that consistency is what reads as established.
  • A reason. A generator cannot know what your business is actually for, so the mark ends up decorative rather than meaningful.

A reasonable sequence

Start free. Use Canva, keep it simple, get trading. Revisit when the logo starts appearing in places that are expensive to change — signage, packaging, vehicle livery, a funding deck — or when you notice you look like your competitors. That is the point at which identity work pays for itself, and not usually before.

If you are ready for the real thing

Ask for the strategy before the visuals. Any studio that opens with logo options before understanding your market is decorating, not designing. And confirm you receive full source files and unrestricted rights — the same ownership question that matters for a website matters here.

Canva offers the most genuine control and exports respectable results. Looka and similar generators are faster but assemble from shared template components. Figma is free and fully professional, though it assumes you can already draw.

Usually yes for the mark itself, but free generators do not check the Indian trademark register, so the design may conflict with an existing registration. Read the licence, and run a trademark search before spending on signage or packaging.

When the mark starts appearing where changes are expensive — signage, packaging, vehicle livery, a funding deck — or when you notice you look like your competitors. Before that, a free tool and good photography will serve you better.
